1964 Chevrolet El Camino "Red"
According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles I am the 3rd owner.
The vehicle is mechanically sound and is a real beauty. I would dare to say
almost everything has been rebuilt or replaced. Always garaged & covered.
Never driven in the rain and is super clean.
Drive train: 327 CID, Edelbrock Performer carburetor, Edelbrock Performer EPS intake manifold, Griffin aluminum radiator with 12" dual electric fans, HEI ignition, Muncie 20 4 speed transmission with Hurst Street Super Shifter, GM 10 bolt limited slip positraction differential with 308 gears, Flowmaster American Thunder header back exhaust system
Suspension: tubular control arms (front, rear, upper & lower) Spohn sway bars,
front power disc brakes conversion(zinc plated, drilled and slotted rotors),
Interior: original GM tilt steering, power steering conversion, cruise control
conversion, Vintage air/heat, bucket seats
Paint & Body: Viper Red, body is laser straight and rust free, all glass was
replaced in 2010, stainless & chrome excellent.
The vehicle was born the first week of December 1964 in Van Nuys, California as a trim level El Camino Custom with a black exterior, red interior with red vinyl bucket seats, a 327 CID & a Muncie M20 four speed transmission. I decoded the vehicle body plate & found this all to be true.
I was told by the 2nd owner that around 2005 the first owner had the vehicle
completely disassembled. All metal surfaces were sanded and the exterior and the interior were painted a Viper Red. Not a trace of the original black exterior color can be found anywhere and it truly looks as if the vehicle was born Viper Red. The first owner also had all new reproduction door panels, carpets, sun visors, dash pad, and headliner installed in the original red color. A matching red carpet cover was made for the spare tire & the wall behind the bucket seats was carpeted as well. The 327 CID engine was replaced with a Jan 1965 327 CID engine. New grille and headlight bezels were installed as well as new front parking light assemblies with new lenses and new rear light assemblies with some new lenses and all new exterior stainless & chrome trim was installed.
The second owner purchased the vehicle in 2010 and was not happy with some areas of the exterior Viper Red paint so he had the entire exterior of the vehicle sanded, removed all side emblems, and repainted it with Viper Red in 2011. The second owner also had the engine rebuilt, painted, added polished aluminum pulleys, chrome alternator, Vintage air/heat with polished aluminum compressor, flexible stainless steel braided hoses, Griffin aluminum radiator, 12 inch dual electric fans, Edelbrock NASCAR Edition RPM air gap intake manifold, 570 Street Avenger Holley carburetor, Ansen black powder coated valve covers, electronic ignition, tubular control arms(front, rear, upper & lower), Spohn sway bars, front power disc brake conversion(zinc plated, drilled and slotted rotors), power steering conversion, cruise control conversion, new shocks for the front, new air shocks for the rear, and a mechanical water temperature gauge. Had all new tires mounted on new FOOSE 15 inch rims as well as a new ignition switch, new wiper switch as well as new door locks and new door handles and new glass. Finally he had the bed sprayed with matching red Line-X and replaced all the bed and tailgate bolts with new stainless steel bolts. The 2nd owner told me at this point he ran out of money and put the vehicle up for sale.
I purchased the vehicle sight unseen on January 10, 2012 & picked up the
vehicle on February 7, 2012. Upon driving it home I soon found out the
differential was shot and at times the transmission would pop out of third. I
completed the following: had rear differential rebuilt(all new bearings, new
308 gears, new limited slip positraction, new axles & studs, new wheel
cylinders, new seals, new rear brakes); had the chrome differential cover
replaced with a new powder coated differential cover embossed with the word SOLID; had the Edelbrock air gap intake (NASCAR limited) replaced with a new Edelbrock Performer EPS intake manifold; had the 570 cfm Street Avenger Holley carburetor replaced with a new Edelbrock Performer carburetor; had the original Muncie 4-speed transmission rebuilt with new Hurst Super Shifter & new shift boot; had the chrome pot metal center console replated; had the original 14" steering wheel replaced with a 14" Grant Formula GT aluminum 3 spoke steering wheel; replaced the red dot halogen headlights with tri-bar clear dot halogen headlights; had dual horns installed & had the original horn relay replaced; had the oil pressure switch replaced; replaced the original gas cap with a new locking gas cap; installed seat belt retractors; purchased new car cover with zippered bag; installed a new graphic ocean sunset scene screen on rear window; replaced the original pitted chrome bucket seat side arm covers with new show quality chrome set; installed new cigarette lighter knob & element; installed new rear license plate light assembly & gasket; installed new rear tail light center reflectors; installed new outside mirror with bow-tie; installed new glove box lock; installed new battery tender terminal harness at battery; installed new silver Griffin radiator cap; installed new seat track assembly knobs; installed new seat back bumpers, installed new rubber bumper kit for hood, doors & glove box; installed new emergency brake handle; installed new vent window handle; installed new dome light base & lens; installed new sun visor bushing kit; installed new sun visor support screws; had new speedometer/odometer installed; had new front bumper & new bolts installed; had new rear bumper & new bolts installed; installed new windshield wiper rubbers; installed new tail light gaskets; installed new front parking light gaskets; had new steering box installed; installed new center console lens; had original non working radio replaced with chrome faced Model One Retrosound 1964-65 Chevrolet radio with USB connection; had new kick panel 100 watt speakers installed & prior to install had them professionally painted Viper Red(have paint code); installed new rear license plate bracket; had new spark plugs installed with tuneup; had new fuel line & fuel filter installed, had new Sunpro dual chrome panel with new mechanical oil pressure gauge installed which matches the white face of the mechanical water temperature gauge; had dash pad replaced with new dash pad; had new extreme oval air cleaner installed with K&N filter, new Interstate MPT24 battery installed August 24, 2017.
The 2nd owner told me he had driven about 2500 miles since rebuilding the
engine and the speedometer/odometer was broken. I had the speedometer/odometer replaced with a new one in May 2012 and I had driven the car about 900 miles before it was replaced. The odometer currently reads 379 miles which means the engine has less than 5000 miles on it since the rebuild. When the speedometer/odometer was replaced the mechanic noticed the tachometer had been replaced or the tachometer had replaced the existing clock somewhere in time.
All mechanically work was performed by a licensed mechanic. I have all receipts for the work I had performed as well as the receipts for all the items that I purchased. The vehicle is mechanically sound and is beautiful. I entered her twice in the Fortuna Redwood AutoExpo judged show and she came in 2nd in her class in 2012 and 2nd in her class in 2014. Also, I did notice the rear aluminum rock and mud extensions are missing and they are not being reproduced and I was never able to find a used pair.
