1956 Ford Thunderbird, Restored
3-Speed OD, 312 CI Engine, Mint Condition
The 1956 Ford Thunderbird, with the removal hard top, port-hole windows, and stunning continental kit, remains one of the most popular, well- liked classic cars ever produced here in the USA. Ever since these little T-Birds came out, as a 10-year old kid growing up in Montana, I knew some day I just had to have one.
Fast forward 62 years. I have had this car for a long time, but have decided to sell it. Why? Because I am much older now, we have 2 little girls, and we are very family-oriented. I soon discovered that the little T-Bird is NOT a family car. So we bought a 1959 Ford Thunderbird rag-top convertible recently to take its place. And my wife + 2 girls and I can fit in that one very comfortably, and have a lot more fun while cruising. So the little T-Bird is no longer a top priority in my life. I have therefore decided it was time to move on, and let somebody else enjoy it for awhile. It is therefore up for sale.
The car has been completely restored and naturally runs like a top. The car had zero rust on it prior to the restoration (always garaged). I had selected a much brighter white than the usual Ford white, which made the car even MORE stunning, especially with the red interior.
The engine is the larger 312 cubic-inch Thunderbird Special, which I had bored
out 30 thousandths over during the restoration. It's now 317 cubic inches, with a 4-barrel carburetor and chrome valve covers. The Thunderbird Special engine provides plenty of power for a very light car.
Overall, the T-Bird has 77,000 miles on it.
It was restored at 75,100 miles.
Mileage since restoration = 1,900 miles.
Transmission: 3-speed + overdrive (4th gear).
T-Bird wire / spoke wheels with Coker radial white-wall tires.
Twin T-Bird mirrors.
4-way power seat.
6-bladed fan was installed. And an electric fan was installed in front of the radiator to minimize over-heating problems. And that did the trick.
Whether cruising on the streets, sitting in a car show, or parked in our driveway, this car really turns heads fast. Hollywood has used cars like this in many popular movies, notably American Graffiti (same car exactly). Usually, I have kept the cool fender skirts on, but many times when the top came off I removed the skirts as well, which added a little more pizzazz to its overall appearance. To me, it always looked faster and more sporty with the skirts off. Both options are gorgeous.
The manual transmission and loud glass-pack pipes make the car even that much more fun to drive, sounding exactly like a souped-up race car. Besides being built for class and speed, the 56 Thunderbird is a work of art. And it is indeed a fun car to drive.
The price is $36,000 or best offer. If you have any questions, or you are interested in seeing the car, please send an e-mail. Or you may call me here in Missoula Montana at (406) 728-2059.
