This 1961 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster has sold and has a new home in Tucson, Arizona.
Includes both tops.
The last of the 283 cu in V-8's for Corvette.
There were 10,939 built that year.
Seems the news got out that Chevrolet was upping the engine size the next year to 327 cu in.
Those who were patient saw a 1962 production of 14,531 total cars.
About half of each year's production had both soft and hard tops.
The color is called Fawn Beige and there were 1,363 cars built with this color scheme.
This car has fawn beige interior and the recently replaced convertible top is a custom canvas top of the same color.
We know from previous owners' records that this car was built in St Louis in May of 1961.
It has been continuously driven rather than stored away and is currently powered by a 350 cu in "Crate" engine using Tuned Port Fuel Injection similar to early 90's GM "F" cars.
This was the engine of choice in Z28 Camaros and Trans Am Firebirds.
The transmission was upgraded to a Tremec 5 speed with Overdrive.
It has a Hurst "Sidewinder" shifter that fits the original floor pan.
Rear axle is a positraction unit with 3.36:1 ratio.
The chassis has been modified by the addition of front disc brakes and power rack and pinion steering.
All changes were meant to make the car easier to drive while maintaining the original appearance that has been loved by so many for so many years.
We, as third owners, have contributed to the legacy of this car.
The second owner was a great friend who delighted in saying the car had been driven in 42 of the lower 48 states.
We completed his goal of driving the car in all 48 in honor of its' 50th birthday.
In 2011, we drove the car from our home in SW Washington to the Atlantic coast in Maine, then south to Atlanta, GA and then kitty corner back home for a total road trip of 8,744 miles.
It was 40 days and included driving through 33 states and a little bit of Canada.

Condition of the car:
During the long trip, we didn't need to add any oil in just under 9.000 miles. The Tremec 5 speed is a smooth shifting, quiet and leak free transmission. The fuel injection system is closed loop and can get into the 20's MPG if you keep your foot out of it, but where's the fun in that? Since the '59 year old paint wasn't known for long life, low maintenance or high gloss, the car currently has a base coat clear coat paint job in the proper Fawn Beige color. We drive it a lot so, there are some gravel chips where you'd expect them but, the appearance is quite good.
The interior was completely redone seven years ago with new carpet, seat covers, Al Knoch door trim panels, etc. Legend has it that the odometer has "Rolled over" five times and as it begins its sixth rotation, there are some squeaks and a couple of rattles but, that's part of the fun of owning a car with a half million miles of memories!
It is reliable and always ready to hit the road.
