A Different Kind of Deuce

Once in a while a hotrod comes along that is so unique, so righteously built, so eye catching that it stands alone like a lighthouse in a sea of Fords. Here is an incredibly well constructed ride that grabs the attention of everyone, no matter where it goes. It is definitely different. Nobody thinks of a DeSoto when they hear the term Deuce, because unlike the 275,000 Ford passenger cars built in 1932, the total output of Walter P. Chrysler’s DeSoto production lines was a mere 25,000 vehicles that year. Only 894 of the rare rumble seat roadster models were produced - about a third of those issued by the Chrysler of Canada production line in Windsor, Ontario. A few years ago, this Windsor survivor underwent a complete transformation in British Columbia. Following a frame off restoration and rebuild as a street rod, the builder sold this amazing show car to a buyer in the United States, and since 2015 the roadster has had an Arizona home.

From bumper to bumper, this DeSoto roadster has been upgraded from its original configuration while retaining the magnificent all steel body and fenders without modification. The original in-line six cylinder L head engine was replaced by a strong professionally prepared 383 CID Chevrolet V8 with Brodix Track 1 aluminum cylinder heads, triple Holley Demon carburetors, Weiand performance intake manifold, and ceramic coated Sanderson block hugger exhaust headers. Behind this 400+ horsepower mill, a Tremec TKX 5 speed manual transmission offers a genuine hot rod driving experience, and the 9 inch Ford PosiTraction rear end assures that the power gets to the ground. Handling is a dream with independent front suspension featuring Heidts Super Ride upper and lower control arms, Alden adjustable coilover shocks and rack and pinion steering, and ride damping and height is adjustable with coilover 4 link rear suspension. There are big disc brakes at all four corners for sure stops, too. With a tip of the hat to modern street rods, the DeSoto rides on big Billet Specialties rims, 18 inch fore and 20 inch aft with fresh radial rubber.

The 1932 DeSoto featured a barrel nose grille inspired by the Miller racing cars of the Thirties. The highly polished chrome gem sparkles with more than 50 horizontal bars and the grille shell, unlike the painted grille shells on stock DeSoto cars, is heavily chrome plated. To better display this masterpiece of the designer’s art, the front bumper has been split and independently suspended in front of each fender. New LED headlights with integral turn signals ride atop the fenders and vented hood side panels help with the engine cooling that comes from a big aluminum crossflow radiator with electric fans. Rear hinged doors open suicide style, and power windows make this roadster, technically, a cabriolet. The soft top is removable and a rumble seat makes this ride ideal for cruising with friends. A recessed license plate and LED taillights molded into the body above the wraparound chrome rear bumper leave a beautiful impression as this little roadster passes by. The car is finished in Champagne Gold, perhaps befitting the namesake Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto who discovered the Mississippi River in his quest for gold nearly 500 years ago. Inside, the interior is finished in Rich Chocolate Leather with baseball stitched, sculptured door panels and soft, comfortable bucket seats. A custom crafted center console housing switches and the sound system, the polished aluminum tilt steering column is topped by a LeCarra leather wrapped steering wheel, and the dash features a full complement of instruments in custom housings that tilt toward the driver. The rumble seat is finished in the same leather motif. Full insulation and rich pile carpeting finish the exquisite interior of this droptop hotrod. Needless to say, this exceptional car collects trophies like a magnet.
